Marriage in the Church of Ceylon is solemnised by an ordained priest in a religious service in which, before God and in the presence of the priest and at least two competent witnesses, the couple covenant together to take each other as husband and wife for as long as they both shall live. The priest then declares them to be husband and wife.
Before solemnising a marriage, the priest must be satisfied that all legal requirements are being met and that the couple know of no impediment to their marriage. Following the service, the newly married couple present themselves to the Registrar, who is the Vicar of the parish, in the vestry, where the marriage certificate is completed and presented to them.
Couples should contact the Registrar of Marriages well in advance of the wedding in order to complete the Notification of Intended Marriage, commonly known as the Pink Form. We recommend that this is done at least six months beforehand. Both parties must be at least 18 years of age on the date of marriage.
